How We Clean Your Gutters, Step by Step

1. Inspect. The crew first checks the system from the roofline for damage, loose brackets and drainage problems.
2. Clear the troughs by hand. Most of the work is done with scoops and hand tools, the most thorough method and one that keeps debris out of the downspouts. Vacuums and leaf blowers come out when the job suits them.
3. Flush the downspouts. Each one is flushed with water. A stubborn clog is broken up with tools made for the purpose.
4. Test the flow. Water is run along the full length of the gutters while we look for pooling or slow sections.
5. Clean up and report. Debris is bagged and taken away, and you hear about anything that needs attention.

The cleaning itself is manual removal and water. No harsh chemicals go into your gutters or garden.

Why Clogged Gutters Matter on the Wet Coast

Most of the Lower Mainland’s rain arrives between October and April, and all of it has to leave your roof through the gutters. When a trough or downspout is blocked, the water goes over the edge instead. From there it runs down fascia boards, soffits and siding and collects at the foundation.

Left alone through a rainy season, that overflow can lead to rotted wood, mould, a flooded basement and erosion around the house. Dark streaks on the siding, plants growing in the trough and gutters sagging away from the fascia are all signs a cleaning is overdue. For most homes in this region we recommend two cleanings a year: one in late fall and one in spring. The late fall visit is the one that matters most. By then most leaves are down and the wettest months are about to start. The spring visit removes what winter storms left behind.

Properties with a lot of tree cover, especially maples, cottonwoods and evergreens, may need a third cleaning in summer. If you have gutter guards, plan on a professional check and cleaning at least once a year anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is eavestrough cleaning different from gutter cleaning?

No. “Eavestrough” is the traditional Canadian word for the trough that runs along the eaves of a roof, and “gutter” is the more common one. They are the same thing.

Are the downspouts included?

Yes. Every downspout is flushed as part of the service, and we finish with a flow test so we know the water is getting all the way through.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least twice a year for most homes here: late fall once the leaves have dropped, and again in spring. Homes under heavy tree cover can need a third visit in summer.

I have gutter guards. Do I still need cleaning?

Yes. Guards cut down on debris but do not stop it. Shingle grit and fine needles still get through or build up on top. We clean both the surface of the guard and the gutter beneath it, and we can give you an honest opinion on whether guards suit your property.

Do you clean gutters in winter?

Yes, we clean year-round. A visit may have to be moved for safety if it is snowing or there is freezing rain.

What happens if you find damage?
